Alexander High School

This study is about the practice of grade retention in elementary schools; a particularly vexing problem in urban school systems. The book describes the school context of retention and evaluates its consequences by tracking the experiences of a large, representative sample of Baltimore school children from first grade through high school. It addresses the complex question of whether repeating a grade is helpful or harmful when children are not keeping up with their coursework.

The Fullerton Longitudinal Study, launched in 1979, chronicledthe development of over 100 children and their families from thechildren's first birthday through their high school completion using across-informant/cross-context methodology. In this volume, thedevelopmental course and sequelae of children's temperament from age1.5 years through high school completion are documented. Using themodel of temperament developed by Alexander Thomas, Stella Chess, andtheir colleagues in the New York Longitudinal Study (NYLS) andstandardized temperament inventories collected repeatedly acrossinfancy, childhood, and adolescence, the authors of "Temperament: ""Infancy through Adolescence" systematically present theirfindings investigating the following issues: "Temperament: Infancy to Adolescence" is an important resource fordevelopmental researchers, clinicians, educators, students, and othersinterested in how individual differences in children's behavioralstyles develop and relate to their development.
